Stoornissen benoemen (Anomia):
De laboratoria van Dr. Swathi Kiran (Boston University) en Dr. David Caplan (Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital) gaan taalherstel bestuderen bij volwassenen met anomia (benoemstoornissen) na een beroerte. Deelnemers krijgen een behandeling gericht op de semantische kenmerken van gewone objecten (bijvoorbeeld dat vogels kunnen vliegen). De studie zal onderzoeken hoe naamgeving en andere taalvaardigheden veranderen als reactie op de behandeling, evenals hoe de hersenen veranderen, zoals gemeten door magnetische resonantiebeeldvorming (MRI) en andere technieken.
Spelling-/schrijfstoornissen (dysgrafie):
Aan de Johns Hopkins University zal het laboratorium van Dr. Brenda Rapp de neurobiologie van taalherstel onderzoeken bij personen met dysgrafie (spelling-/schrijfproblemen) als gevolg van een beroerte. In dit onderzoek zal de behandeling zich richten op het verbeteren van het spellingsvermogen. De studie zal onderzoeken hoe spelling en andere taalvaardigheden veranderen als reactie op behandeling, evenals hoe de hersenen veranderen, zoals gemeten door magnetische resonantiebeeldvorming (MRI) en andere technieken.
Tekorten in zinsbegrip en -productie:
Het laboratorium van Dr. Cynthia Thompson aan de Northwestern University zal taalherstel onderzoeken bij personen met een tekort aan zinsproductie en -begrip. De behandeling richt zich op het maken en begrijpen van complexe zinnen. Bij baseline (week 0) en na de behandelingsperiode (in week 12) nemen de deelnemers deel aan taal-, eye-tracking- en MRI-testen om te leren hoe de verwerking van taal, evenals de hersenfunctie, verandert als een resultaat van de behandeling.

Inclusiecriteria:
- Afasie na een beroerte
- Stoke was minstens 1 jaar geleden
- Medisch stabiel
- Rechtshandig
- Normaal of 'gecorrigeerd naar normaal' zicht en gehoor
- Engels als primaire taal
- Minimaal een middelbare school opleiding
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Geschiedenis van neurologische aandoeningen, hoofdtrauma, psychiatrische stoornissen, alcoholisme of spraak-, taal- of leerstoornissen in de ontwikkeling
