下肢切断を経験した退役軍人の歩行移動を可能にする義肢ソケットは、通常、体と環境のインターフェースとして機能する固定形状の剛性が高く過剰に頑丈な構造要素です。退役軍人の義肢ソケットは特注品であり、一人の人物にのみ適合するように設計されています。
義肢提供後の適合の変化は、むしろ一般的です。体重、筋肉の萎縮、または個人の健康状態に関連する変化は数か月かけて発生することがあり、食事や糖尿病の合併症による変化は数時間で発生する可能性があります。残肢とソケットの形状の不一致が小さい場合、退役軍人は残肢用ソックスを着用または脱ぐことでその差を調整できます。このアプローチは理想的ではありません。なぜなら、一部の患者は他の患者よりもこの慣行を採用する傾向があるからです。形状の不一致が大きい場合、通常は新しい義肢ソケットが必要です。大小にかかわらず、変化を管理できないと、義肢の使用や残肢の健康に悪影響を及ぼす可能性があります。

参加者は、計装されていない複製の調整可能な義肢ソケットを2週間着用した後、計装された調整可能な義肢ソケットを着用します。参加者は5〜10分間歩き回ることが許可され、その間、研究用義肢装具士が研究用義肢の適合とアライメントを確認します。その後、座っているとき、立っているとき、歩いているときの圧力測定が収集されます。立位と歩行の活動はランダムな順序で行われ、参加者が調整可能なパネルの圧力を解放する1分間の着座位休息が挟まれます。歩行試験はトレッドミルで行われます。

- 自己選択速度での歩行 10分 各活動の開始直前に、参加者は次の活動が何であるかを伝えられ、それに応じてソケットを調整するよう促されます。参加者はまた、活動中に自由に調整を行うことができます。この場合、活動の持続時間は延長され、新しい調整設定で1分間の活動が残るようにします。各活動の終了時に、アンケート質問を使用して締め付け感が評価されます。具体的には、各活動の後、研究者は各参加者に、その時点での調整可能な義肢ソケットの締め付け感を0から10の尺度で評価するよう求めます。

義足ソケットには、内側および外側の近位脛骨領域と後部腓腹筋領域に位置する3つの調整可能なパネルを追加します。
