Inclusiecriteria:
- Ondertekende door de patiënt geïnformeerde toestemming
- Patiënten met MDD (DSM-IV-TR - gebruikte criteria) OF Patiënten met bipolaire depressie (DSM-IV-TR - gebruikte criteria)
- Mannen of vrouwen ouder dan 18 jaar
- In-patiënten of poliklinische patiënten die momenteel zijn ingepland om ECT of rTMS te ontvangen
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Patiënten die lijden aan andere neurologische of endocriene stoornissen waarvan bekend is dat ze het reukvermogen beïnvloeden.
- Patiënten die lijden aan een luchtweginfectie of andere luchtwegaandoening waarvan bekend is dat ze het reukvermogen beïnvloeden, naar goeddunken van de onderzoeker
- Schizofrenie, schizoaffectieve of andere psychotische stoornis
- Patiënten ouder dan 65 jaar
- Patiënten met significante allergieën
- Patiënten met omgevingsgevoeligheden (bijv. parfums)
- Patiënten met mechanische obstructie van de neusgangen (bijv. afwijkend tussenschot)
- Patiënten met aangeboren anosmie of andere eerdere primaire reukstoornissen

Geduldig
Patiënten krijgen ECT of iTBS als depressiebehandeling.
Het olfactorische functioneren wordt vóór de behandeling en 6 weken later bij de nabehandeling beoordeeld met behulp van Sniffin Sticks.
De cognitie zal ook worden getest met behulp van Cognitive Function Imaging en Battery in de fMRI en Cognitive Batteries buiten de scanner bij de voorbehandeling, 6 weken later bij de nabehandeling en 3 maanden na de laatste behandelingssessie.

Individuen worden in de fMRI-scanner geplaatst en voltooien de NBACK Cognitive Task
Met behulp van Sniffin Sticks wordt het reukvermogen beoordeeld aan de hand van drie tests: identificatie, discriminatie en drempel.
Deelnemers voeren de volgende cognitieve batterijen uit: DSST, TMT A & B, RAVLT

Controle
Controles zullen hun olfactorische werking laten beoordelen bij aanvang en 6 weken na de basisbeoordeling met behulp van Sniffin Sticks.
