Algemeen overzicht:
Alle in aanmerking komende deelnemers die ervoor kiezen om aan dit onderzoek deel te nemen, zullen worden gevraagd om één basisbezoek en één vervolgbezoek af te leggen. MCI-deelnemers worden willekeurig toegewezen aan de experimentele groep (muziekgroep) of controlegroep (niet-muziekgroep) wanneer hun inschrijving voor het onderzoek is bevestigd.
Afhankelijk van de beoordelingen kan het onderzoek op verschillende locaties plaatsvinden. Screeningsbeoordelingen vinden plaats via de telefoon en persoonlijk met een onderzoeksmedewerker. Baseline- en follow-upbeoordelingen zullen plaatsvinden op de campus bij de Bioscience Research Collaborative (BRC) en bij het Methodist Research Institute-Translational Imaging Center.
Beoordelingsbezoeken. Geïnteresseerde personen zullen het eerste bezoek voltooien voor een basisbloedafname, gezondheidsbeoordelingen, cognitieve en gedragstaken en beoordelingen van sociaal en emotioneel welzijn in het BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC)-gebouw van Rice University, Suite 140. Deelnemers vervoeren zichzelf of worden door hun verzorger of familielid naar het BRC-gebouw gebracht. Baseline en follow-up neuroimaging zullen worden uitgevoerd bij Methodist Research Institute-Translational Imaging Center. Daarnaast wordt het sociale, fysieke en emotionele welzijn van de deelnemer en de verzorger (indien aanwezig) beoordeeld met een reeks vragenlijsten voor en na de interventie.
De bezoeken worden gepland tussen 07.30 uur en 10.30 uur. Een onderzoekscoördinator zal een gedetailleerde beschrijving van het onderzoek geven, vragen beantwoorden en schriftelijke geïnformeerde toestemming verkrijgen. Deelnemers vullen vragenlijsten, cognitieve taken en gezondheidsbeoordelingen in (meting van hartslag, gewicht, bloeddruk en taillemetingen) en laten bloed afnemen. Zorgverleners zullen, indien ze ermee instemmen om deel te nemen, zelfrapportagevragenlijsten invullen met betrekking tot sociaal en emotioneel welzijn. Neurale activiteit met behulp van de fMRI zal worden verzameld in het Houston Methodist Hospital Translational Imaging Center. Na afronding van de muziekcursus worden deelnemers ingepland voor één vervolgbezoek. De baseline- en follow-upbezoeken zouden ongeveer 2-3 uur moeten duren in het BRC en ongeveer 1,5 uur in het Methodist Imaging Center.
Muziek tussenkomst. Deelnemers aan de experimentele groep ondergaan een muziekopleiding van 6 weken onder leiding van een muzikant verbonden aan de Rice's Shepherd School of Music. De muziekinterventie vindt plaats op de hoofdcampus van Rice University of bij de Bioscience Research Collaborative. De zes weken durende creatieve muziekcursus, ontworpen door Dr. Brandt en de andere bekroonde componisten van Musiqa, zal worden gegeven door afgestudeerde studentcomponisten van de Rice Shepherd School of Music. Om de cursus zo toegankelijk mogelijk te maken, hoeven deelnemers geen muzieknotatie te kunnen lezen of enige muzikale achtergrond te hebben, en cursusinstructeurs zullen gevestigde manieren gebruiken om ongetrainde muzikanten effectief te inspireren. J. Todd Frazier, directeur van het Center for Performing Arts Medicine (CPAM) van het Houston Methodist Hospital in de TMC, zal helpen bij het plannen van een concert in de Margaret Alkek Williams Crain Garden Performance Series van het Center, waar deelnemers hun laatste composities zullen uitvoeren voor familie, verzorgers en leden van de gemeenschap. Het gekozen curriculum en beoordelingsplan wordt ondersteund door voorbereidend werk in samenwerking met CPAM met betrekking tot het voordeel van muziek voor neuroplasticiteit.

Inclusiecriteria:
- Gediagnosticeerd met vroege tot matige milde cognitieve stoornissen (zelf beschreven en bevestigd door arts).
- Engels kunnen lezen en schrijven
- Grijpkracht niet lager dan 2 standaarddeviatie onder het gemiddelde in hun leeftijdsgroep
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Aanzienlijke visuele of auditieve beperking waardoor de vragenlijsten niet kunnen worden gelezen en/of gehoord
- Klasse III hartfalen
- Auto-immuun- en/of inflammatoire aandoeningen
- Elk geïmplanteerd medisch apparaat waardoor u geen fMRI-scan kunt ondergaan
- Zwangere of zogende vrouwen
- Gewicht > 300 pond of BMI boven de 40
- Professionele muzikant
- Gediagnosticeerd met de ziekte van Parkinson

Experimenteel: Muziekgroep
Personen in de muziekgroep zullen twee beoordelingsbezoek voltooien (pre-interventie en post-interventie).
Na hun basisbezoek zullen ze deelnemen aan een groep van 6 weken groeps, gepland voor 2 uur per dag, 3 dagen per week.
De dagelijkse muziekworkshops worden geleid door een muzikant geassocieerd met de Rice Shepherd School of Music.
Elke week zal zorgvuldig in moeilijkheden worden geschaald, waarbij de workshops geleidelijk geavanceerder worden.
Het luisteren van de eerste week zal bijvoorbeeld gericht zijn op korte en meer bekende werken zoals instrumentale etudes en volksliederen.
Geleidelijk zal de instructeur bouwen aan symfonische bewegingen, evenals meer onbekende en experimentele muziek.
De cursus zal culmineren in het creëren van een definitieve compositie.

Personen in de niet-muzikale groep zullen twee beoordelingsbezoeken afsluiten die worden gescheiden met 2-3 maanden.
Ze zullen worden gevraagd om niet deel te nemen aan andere muziekgerelateerde cursussen gedurende de tijd dat ze zijn ingeschreven voor het onderzoek.
Aan het einde van de participatie krijgen deelnemers middelen om muzieklessen te zoeken.
