Omaishoitajat (CG:t) kokevat usein merkittävää psyykkistä ja fyysistä kärsimystä, mikä johtaa huomattaviin heikkenemiseen omaishoitajien terveydessä ja elämänlaadussa (QOL). CG-häiriön vähentäminen voi parantaa CG:n henkistä ja fyysistä terveyttä, parantaa yleistä elämänlaatua ja parantaa heidän tarjoamaa hoitoa.
Harvoja tehokkaita interventioita, jotka voidaan toteuttaa laajasti ja noudattaa helposti, on kuitenkin arvioitu tarkasti. Qigong on yhä suositumpi multimodaalinen mielen ja kehon harjoitus, joka näyttää lupaavalta käsitellä monia psykososiaalisia ja fyysisiä tekijöitä, jotka ovat erittäin tärkeitä painopisteiden kannalta. Qigong, jolla on monia yhteisiä piirteitä Tai Chin kanssa, sisältää hitaita ja lempeitä liikkeitä, hengitysharjoittelua ja lukuisia kognitiivisia taitoja, mukaan lukien lisääntynyt kehotietoisuus, keskittynyt henkinen huomio ja mielikuvat, jotka yhdessä voivat tarjota enemmän hyötyä terveydelle kuin unimodaaliset hoidot. Vankka näyttö tukee sitä, että Qigong- ja Tai Chi -harjoittelu ryhmissä voi parantaa fyysisen ja emotionaalisen terveyden, elämänlaadun ja itsetehokkuuden monia alueita eri väestöryhmissä. On huomattava, että viimeaikaiset kansalliset tutkimukset osoittavat, että merkittävä osa Yhdysvaltojen väestöstä, joka ilmoitti käyttävänsä Qigongia ja Tai Chi -ohjelmaa terveyteen, suosi itseohjautuvaa oppimista DVD-levyiltä ja Internet-resursseista. Vaikka kourallinen tutkimuksia tukee mahdollisuuksia mielen ja kehon käytäntöjen verkko- tai DVD-pohjaiseen oppimiseen, tällaisten ohjelmien arviointeja ei ole testattu hyvin etenkään painopisteissä.
Käyttämällä syövän hoitajia (CCG:t) edustavana populaationa suurempaa CG-populaatiota, pitkän aikavälin tavoitteena on suorittaa lopullinen koe, jossa arvioidaan laajalti saatavilla oleva ja aiemmin tutkittu Qigong-hoito (Eight Brocades, Baduanjin Qigong). Interventiot toimitetaan joko ohjaajien johtamissa yhteisöllisissä ryhmissä tai internetin kautta henkilöille, jotka oppivat tallennetun ohjatun opetuksen kautta, jota täydennetään ohjaajien ajoittain antamalla virtuaalisella livepalautteella. Tuloksia ovat elämänlaatu, väsymys, unihäiriöt, psyykkinen ahdistus, hoitajan taakka ja fyysinen toiminta. Tämän R34:n lyhyen aikavälin tavoitteena on suorittaa sekamenetelmien pilotti, satunnaistettu kontrolloitu tutkimus (RCT), jotta saadaan tietoa lopullisen tutkimuksen toteutettavuudesta ja suunnittelusta. Tutkijat saavuttavat nämä tavoitteet satunnaisttamalla (1:1:1) 54 CCG:tä johonkin kolmesta ehdosta: (1) yhteisöpohjainen qigong-ohjelma; (2) Internet-pohjainen qigong-ohjelma; tai (3) itsehoidon kontrolliryhmä.
Erityinen tavoite 1 on viimeistellä Qigong-interventiosisältö ja toimitusprotokollat. Erityistavoitteessa 2 arvioidaan Qigongin "oppivuutta" yhteisöpohjaisissa ryhmätunneissa ja verkkopohjaisen protokollan kautta käyttämällä uutta pätevyysinstrumenttia. Erityistavoitteessa 3 arvioidaan CCG:n värväämisen ja säilyttämisen toteutettavuutta 12 viikon kliinisessä tutkimuksessa ja kaikkien tulosten testausprotokollan suorittamista. Tutkimuksen toteutettavuudesta ja ansioista tiedotetaan lisää muodollisella kvalitatiivisella analyysillä tutkimuksen suorittaneiden, vetäytyneiden osallistujien ja Qigong-ohjaajien lähtöhaastatteluista.

Sisällyttämiskriteerit:
- Osallistuja on puoliso, kumppani, perheenjäsen tai ystävä, joka tarjoaa fyysistä, henkistä ja/tai taloudellista tukea syöpäpotilaalle.
- Osallistuja osaa ymmärtää, puhua ja lukea englantia.
- Osallistujalla on vähintään 3 National Comprehensive Cancer Networkin (NCCN) hätälämpömittarissa, joka on sovitettu hoitajille.
- Osallistuja voi antaa tietoisen suostumuksen.
Poissulkemiskriteerit:
- Osallistujalla ei ole epävakaata sairautta (esim. äskettäinen sairaalahoito, epävakaa sydän- ja verisuonisairaus, aktiivinen syöpä).
- Osallistujalla ei ole psykiatrisia häiriöitä (esim. hallitsematon masennus tai psykoosi, päihteiden väärinkäyttö, vakava persoonallisuushäiriö)
- Osallistujalla ei ole rappeuttavaa hermolihassairautta (esim. Parkinsonin tauti, multippeliskleroosi).
- Osallistuja ei pysty kävelemään yhtäjaksoisesti 15 minuuttia.
- Osallistujalla ei ole viime aikoina käynyt säännöllisiä Qigong- tai vastaavia (esim. jooga tai tai chi) -tunteja, jotka on määritelty 20 tai useammaksi tunniksi viimeisen 6 kuukauden aikana.
- Osallistuminen ei tällä hetkellä ole yli 240 minuuttia kohtalaisen intensiivistä liikuntaa viikossa.

Tähän ryhmään satunnaistetut osallistujat seuraavat yhtä, 75 minuutin oppituntia viikossa, jota täydennetään 20 minuutin kotiharjoittelulla 3 lisäpäivänä.

Yhteisöpohjainen Qigong-ryhmä osallistuu yhteen 75 minuutin pituiseen Qigong-tuntiin viikossa 12 viikon ajan.
Lisäksi osallistujat harjoittelevat Qigongia kotona 20 minuuttia päivässä, 3 päivänä viikossa.
Painettuja materiaaleja ohjataan kotiharjoitteluun.

KOKEELLISTA: Internet-pohjainen Qigong Group
Tähän ryhmään satunnaistetut osallistujat seuraavat kahta 40 minuutin verkkotuntia, joita täydennetään myös 20 minuutin kotiharjoittelulla 3 lisäpäivänä.

Internet-ohjatulle Qigong-ryhmälle annetaan tietokonetabletti, jolla pääsee online-qigong-tunneille.
Kaikille tähän ryhmään nimetyille osallistujille tutkimuskoordinaattori antaa opetusohjelman Qigong-ohjelman käyttöön.
Osallistujia pyydetään seuraamaan 40 minuuttia kestävää Qigong-tuntia kahdesti viikossa 12 viikon ajan ja harjoittelemaan vielä 20 minuuttia päivässä, 3 päivänä viikossa.
Kaikki harjoitukset suoritetaan kotona.

EI_INTERVENTIA: Itsehoidon valvontaryhmä
Itsehoidon kontrolliryhmää pyydetään olemaan harjoittelematta Qigong-harjoituksia tutkimuksen aikana.
Osallistujille toimitetaan omaishoitoa koskeva opetuskirja, joka sisältää omaisohjaukseen ja omaishoitajien terveyteen liittyviä toimintoja (The Caregiver Helpbook: Powerful Tools for Caregiving).
Kirjan näyttöön perustuva ohjelma on suunniteltu tarjoamaan omaishoitajille työkalut, joilla he voivat parantaa itsehoitoaan ja itseluottamusta vaikeiden tilanteiden, tunteiden ja päätösten käsittelyssä.
Lisäksi tutkimushenkilökunta soittaa kerran kuukaudessa itsehoidon kontrolliryhmään osallistuville.
