Mantelzorgers (CG's) ervaren vaak aanzienlijke psychische en fysieke problemen, wat leidt tot een duidelijke vermindering van de gezondheid en kwaliteit van leven (QOL) van de zorgverleners. Het verminderen van CG-nood heeft het potentieel om de mentale en fysieke gezondheid van CG te verbeteren, de algehele kwaliteit van leven te verbeteren en te leiden tot verbeteringen in de zorg die ze bieden.
Er zijn echter maar weinig effectieve interventies die op grote schaal kunnen worden uitgevoerd en gemakkelijk kunnen worden nageleefd, grondig geëvalueerd. Qigong is een steeds populairder wordende multimodale mind-body-oefening die veelbelovend is in het aanpakken van een breed scala aan psychosociale en fysieke factoren die zeer relevant zijn voor CG's. Qigong deelt veel kenmerken met Tai Chi en bevat elementen van langzame, zachte bewegingen, ademhalingstraining en een aantal cognitieve vaardigheden, waaronder een verhoogd lichaamsbewustzijn, gerichte mentale aandacht en beeldspraak, die gezamenlijk grotere voordelen voor de gezondheid kunnen opleveren in vergelijking met unimodale therapieën. Een robuuste bewijsbasis ondersteunt dat Qigong- en Tai Chi-training in groepen meerdere domeinen van fysieke en emotionele gezondheid, QOL en zelfeffectiviteit in diverse populaties kan verbeteren. Merk op dat recente nationale onderzoeken aangeven dat een aanzienlijk deel van de Amerikaanse bevolking dat aangeeft Qigong en Tai Chi te gebruiken voor de gezondheid, de voorkeur geeft aan zelfgestuurd leren van dvd's en internetbronnen. Hoewel een handvol studies het potentieel voor webgebaseerd of dvd-gebaseerd leren van mind-body-praktijken ondersteunt, zijn evaluaties van dergelijke programma's niet goed getest, vooral in CG's.
Met behulp van kankerverzorgers (CCG's) als een representatieve populatie van de grotere CG-populatie, is het doel op lange termijn om een definitief onderzoek uit te voeren ter evaluatie van een algemeen toegankelijk en eerder bestudeerd Qigong-regime (Eight Brocades, Baduanjin Qigong). Interventies worden gegeven in community-based groepen onder leiding van instructeurs of via internet aan individuen die leren door middel van opgenomen begeleide instructie aangevuld met intermitterende virtuele live feedback van instructeurs. Uitkomsten zijn onder meer kwaliteit van leven, vermoeidheid, slaapstoornissen, psychische problemen, belasting van de verzorger en fysiek functioneren. De kortetermijndoelen van deze R34 zijn het uitvoeren van een mixed-methods pilot-randomized controlled trial (RCT) om de haalbaarheid en het ontwerp van een definitieve studie te onderzoeken. De onderzoekers zullen deze doelen aanpakken door 54 CCG's willekeurig (1:1:1) toe te wijzen aan een van de volgende drie voorwaarden: (1) een op de gemeenschap gebaseerd Qigong-programma; (2) een op internet gebaseerd Qigong-programma; of (3) een controlegroep voor zelfzorg.
Specifiek doel 1 is het voltooien van de Qigong-interventie-inhoud en leveringsprotocollen. Specifiek Doel 2 zal de 'leerbaarheid' van Qigong beoordelen, gegeven in community-based groepslessen en via een webgebaseerd protocol met behulp van een nieuw vaardigheidsinstrument. Specifiek doel 3 zal de haalbaarheid evalueren van het rekruteren en behouden van CCG's in een klinische studie van 12 weken, en het voltooien van alle protocollen voor het testen van resultaten. De haalbaarheid en verdienste van de studie zullen verder worden geïnformeerd door formele kwalitatieve analyse van exit-interviews van studievoltooiers, deelnemers die zich terugtrekken en Qigong-instructeurs.

Inclusiecriteria:
- Deelnemer is een echtgenoot, partner, familielid of vriend die fysieke, emotionele en/of financiële ondersteuning biedt aan een kankerpatiënt.
- De deelnemer kan Engels verstaan, spreken en lezen.
- Deelnemer heeft minimaal niveau 3 op de noodthermometer van het National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), aangepast voor zorgverleners.
- Deelnemer kan geïnformeerde toestemming geven.
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Deelnemer heeft geen onstabiele ziekte (bijv. recente ziekenhuisopname, onstabiele hart- en vaatziekten, actieve kanker).
- Deelnemer heeft geen psychiatrische stoornis (bijv. onbeheerde depressie of psychose, middelenmisbruik, ernstige persoonlijkheidsstoornis)
- Deelnemer heeft geen degeneratieve neuromusculaire aandoening (bijvoorbeeld de ziekte van Parkinson, multiple sclerose).
- Deelnemer heeft geen onvermogen om 15 minuten ononderbroken te lopen.
- Deelnemer heeft geen recente geschiedenis van het bijwonen van reguliere Qigong- of soortgelijke (bijv. Yoga of Tai Chi) lessen gedefinieerd als 20 of meer lessen in de afgelopen 6 maanden.
- Deelname is momenteel niet meer dan 240 minuten matig intensief bewegen per week.

EXPERIMENTEEL: Op de gemeenschap gebaseerde Qigong-groep
Deelnemers gerandomiseerd in deze groep volgen één les van 75 minuten per week aangevuld met 20 minuten thuis oefenen op 3 extra dagen.

De Community-based Qigong-groep zal gedurende 12 weken één Qigong-les van 75 minuten per week bijwonen.
Daarnaast oefenen de deelnemers Qigong thuis gedurende 20 minuten per dag, 3 dagen per week.
Er wordt gedrukt materiaal verstrekt om thuis te oefenen.

EXPERIMENTEEL: Op internet gebaseerde Qigong-groep
Deelnemers gerandomiseerd in deze groep volgen twee online sessies van elk 40 minuten, aangevuld met 20 minuten thuis oefenen op 3 extra dagen.

De internetgeleide Qigong-groep krijgt een computertablet om toegang te krijgen tot online Qigong-lessen.
Alle deelnemers die aan deze groep zijn toegewezen, krijgen van de onderzoekscoördinator een tutorial om het Qigong-programma te gebruiken.
Deelnemers wordt gevraagd om gedurende 12 weken twee keer per week een Qigong-les van 40 minuten te volgen, en nog eens 20 minuten per dag, 3 dagen per week te oefenen.
Alle sessies worden thuis afgerond.

GEEN_INTERVENTIE: Controlegroep zelfzorg
De controlegroep Zelfzorg zal worden verzocht tijdens het onderzoek geen Qigong te beoefenen.
Deelnemers krijgen een educatief boek over mantelzorg met zelfgeleide activiteiten met betrekking tot mantelzorg en de gezondheid van zorgverleners (The Caregiver Helpbook: Powerful Tools for Caregiving).
Het evidence-based programma van het boek is ontworpen om zorgverleners de tools te bieden om hun zelfzorg en hun zelfvertrouwen te vergroten om met moeilijke situaties, emoties en beslissingen om te gaan.
Daarnaast bellen de studiemedewerkers de deelnemers aan de controlegroep zelfzorg één keer per maand op.
