Artrose-initiatief (OAI): een onderzoek naar de gezondheid van de knie

Knieartrose veroorzaakt meer gezondheidsproblemen en medische kosten dan elke andere vorm van artritis. Symptomen van artrose kunnen variëren van stijfheid en milde pijn tot ernstige gewrichtspijn en zelfs invaliditeit. Eerder onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat bepaalde factoren, zoals kniepijn, eerdere knieblessures of knieoperaties, artrose van de hand of obesitas, kunnen leiden tot knieartrose. De OAI is een multicenter, observationeel onderzoek naar knieartrose dat informatie zal verzamelen over potentiële biomarkers voor artrose en trends in het ontstaan en de progressie van artrose.
De OAI zal deelnemers die knieartrose hebben of een hoog risico lopen op het ontwikkelen van knieartrose gedurende een periode van acht jaar rekruteren en volgen in een van de vier klinische centra. Bloed- en urineverzameling, magnetische resonantiebeeldvorming (MRI) en röntgenfoto's zullen worden voltooid tijdens elk van de vier jaarlijkse vervolgbezoeken. Een vragenlijst en lichamelijk onderzoek bij de screening zullen beoordelen op risicofactoren voor de ontwikkeling en progressie van knieartrose. Niveaus van kniepijn en fysieke handicap zullen bij aanvang van de studie en bij elk van de vervolgbezoeken worden beoordeeld door middel van vragenlijsten en onderzoek.

Inclusiecriteria:
Moet voldoen aan een van de volgende criteria:
- Overgewicht
- Vorige knieblessure of operatie
- Kniepijn in het afgelopen jaar. Deelnemers hoeven geen huidige kniepijn te hebben om deel te nemen aan het onderzoek.
- Ouder of broer of zus die een knievervanging heeft ondergaan
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Reumatoïde artritis
- Gewrichtsvervangingen in beide knieën
- Zonder hulp niet kunnen lopen
- MRI van de knie niet kunnen ondergaan
