Gulf War Illness (GWI) is een ziekte met meerdere symptomen en een onbekende etiologie. GWI is een belangrijke oorzaak van invaliditeit bij Golfoorlogveteranen. Cognitieve klachten zijn een veel voorkomend symptoom van GWI, wat suggereert dat de hersenen betrokken zijn bij de ontwikkeling van deze aandoening. Naarmate veteranen ouder worden, kunnen deze cognitieve klachten verergeren en verergeren door het verouderingsproces. GWI kan een aandoening zijn van "versnelde" hersenveroudering. Daarom kunnen er langetermijngevolgen zijn van GWI, en de aanwezigheid van GWI kan iemands risico op het ontwikkelen van de ziekte van Alzheimer (AD) of andere vormen van dementie verhogen. In vergelijking met andere hersengerelateerde ziekten zoals een beroerte, is er relatief weinig bekend over GWI en hoe deze aandoening de normale leeftijdsgerelateerde veranderingen in de hersenen beïnvloedt.
De onderzoeksdoelen zijn:
- Om te bepalen of veteranen met Golfoorlogziekte abnormale regulering van de bloedstroom in de hersenen en autonome stoornissen vertonen in vergelijking met veteranen zonder Golfoorlogziekte.
- Om te bepalen of hersendoorbloeding en variabelen van het autonome zenuwstelsel bij veteranen geassocieerd zijn met andere markers van hersenveroudering die relevant zijn voor cognitieve achteruitgang.

Inclusiecriteria:
- Ingezet in de Perzische Golf tussen 1990-1991
- Lichaamsmassa <300 lbs
- Diagnose van Golfoorlogziekte op basis van CMI/CDC- en Kansas-definities of Geen diagnose van Golfoorlogziekte
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Huidig of levenslang bewijs van: diabetes type II, neurologische ziekte, kankerbehandeling, reumatoïde artritis, lupus, bipolaire stoornis, psychotische stoornissen of stemmingsstoornissen met psychotische kenmerken
- Actueel gebruik van illegale middelen of gedeeltelijke kwijtschelding van minder dan 1 jaar
- Het nemen van meerdere kalmerende middelen of anticonvulsiva
- Momenteel zwanger
- Absolute contra-indicaties om testen uit te oefenen
- Contra-indicaties voor MRI
- Andere significante medische aandoeningen naar goeddunken van de onderzoeker
