Regulação cardiovascular e neurovascular em GWI
Disfunção autonômica, fluxo sanguíneo cerebral e declínio cognitivo em veteranos com doenças da Guerra do Golfo

A Doença da Guerra do Golfo (GWI) é uma doença com múltiplos sintomas e etiologia desconhecida. GWI é uma das principais causas de deficiência em veteranos da Guerra do Golfo. Queixas cognitivas são um sintoma comum de GWI, o que sugere que o cérebro está envolvido no desenvolvimento dessa condição. À medida que os veteranos envelhecem, essas queixas cognitivas podem piorar e ser agravadas pelo processo de envelhecimento. GWI pode ser uma condição de envelhecimento cerebral "acelerado". Portanto, pode haver consequências de longo prazo de GWI, e a presença de GWI pode aumentar o risco de uma pessoa desenvolver a doença de Alzheimer (DA) ou outras demências. Em comparação com outras doenças relacionadas ao cérebro, como acidente vascular cerebral, relativamente pouco se sabe sobre GWI e como essa condição afeta as mudanças normais relacionadas à idade no cérebro.
Os objetivos da pesquisa são:
- Determinar se veteranos com doença da Guerra do Golfo demonstram regulação anormal do fluxo sanguíneo cerebral e disfunção autonômica quando comparados com veteranos sem doença da Guerra do Golfo.
- Determinar se o fluxo sanguíneo cerebral e as variáveis do sistema nervoso autônomo em veteranos estão associados a outros marcadores de envelhecimento cerebral relevantes para o declínio cognitivo.

Critério de inclusão:
- Implantado no Golfo Pérsico entre 1990-1991
- Massa corporal <300 libras
- Diagnóstico de doença da Guerra do Golfo com base nas definições do CMI/CDC e do Kansas ou sem diagnóstico de doença da Guerra do Golfo
Critério de exclusão:
- Evidência atual ou vitalícia de: diabetes tipo II, doença neurológica, tratamento de câncer, artrite reumatóide, lúpus, transtorno bipolar, transtornos psicóticos ou transtornos do humor com características psicóticas
- Uso atual de substâncias ilícitas ou remissão parcial por menos de 1 ano
- Tomar vários sedativos ou medicamentos anticonvulsivantes
- Atualmente grávida
- Contra-indicações absolutas ao teste de esforço
- Contra-indicações para ressonância magnética
- Outras condições médicas significativas a critério do investigador
