Beschrijving
Inclusiecriteria:
- actief gedurende ten minste 1,5 uur per week, een geschiedenis van ten minste 1 significante verstuiking van de enkel waarvoor medische interventie nodig was, herhaalde symptomen van pijn, zwelling, zwakte, instabiliteit en herhaalde episodes van "bezwijken".
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- aanwezigheid van letsel aan de onderste ledematen (diagnose door een medische professional in de afgelopen 3 maanden met huidige symptomen), eerdere operaties aan een van de benen, gediagnosticeerde enkelverstuiking in de afgelopen 6 weken, voorgeschiedenis van enkelfracturen en/of dislocaties.

Geen tussenkomst: Controlegroep
Elke patiënt in de controlegroep voerde geen revalidatieoefeningen uit.
Gedurende de interventieperiode moest de patiënt zich wekelijks melden bij een lid van het onderzoeksteam om eventuele veranderingen in de enkel te bespreken of eventuele verwondingen te melden.

Experimenteel: Verzetsbandgroep
Elke sessie voltooiden de patiënten weerstandstraining met behulp van een weerstandsband in 4 bewegingsrichtingen van de enkel (plantairflexie, dorsiflexie, inversie en eversie).
Patiënten voltooiden tijdens elke sessie 3 sets van 10 herhalingen.
Elke 3 sessies zou de bandweerstand toenemen.

Experimenteel: Biomechanisch enkelplatformsysteem
Het Biomechanical Ankle Platform System-bord is een ovaalvormig bord dat een halve bol aan de onderkant van het bord gebruikt, zodat de patiënt op een onstabiele ondergrond kan trainen.
Een eenbenige stand op hun aangedane ledemaat werd uitgevoerd op het Biomechanical Ankle Platform System-bord terwijl cirkels met de klok mee en tegen de klok in werden voltooid.
De initiële draairichting werd door de patiënt gekozen en elke 10 seconden van de proef van 40 seconden gewijzigd.
Vijf proeven van 40 seconden werden voltooid met rustintervallen van 1 minuut tussen de proeven.
De progressie werd bepaald door de toezichthoudende arts en was gebaseerd op het vermogen van de patiënt om soepele overgangen te maken tussen richtingsveranderingen en voltooiing van soepele cirkelvormige rotaties in beide richtingen.

Biomechanische enkelplatformsysteembordgroep - gebruikt verschillende niveaus van halve bollen om de hoeveelheid beweging die is toegestaan bij de enkel te vergroten.

Experimenteel: Combinatie groep
Patiënten die het combinatieprotocol voltooiden, voltooiden zowel de protocollen voor de weerstandsband als het biomechanische enkelplatformsysteembord tijdens elke sessie.
De volgorde van voltooiing van de oefening werd voor elke sessie gecompenseerd.
