Jelenleg a betegek több mint 50%-ánál alakul ki Alzheimer-kórhoz hasonló betegség a kórházi kezelést követően.

- Felkerült a Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital (FMLH) intenzív osztályára (ICU)
- A szepszis diagnózisa
- 65 éves vagy idősebb
- Szükséges gépi lélegeztetés vagy vazopresszor terápia az intenzív osztályon
- Delíriumom volt az intenzív osztályon
Kizárási kritériumok:
- Nem angolul beszélő
- Súlyos demencia, amely megzavarná a tanulmányi tevékenységekben való részvételt
- Korábbi vagy jelenlegi szerkezeti neurológiai sérülés, amely megzavarná a vizsgálati eredményeket

A strukturált kognitív rehabilitációs program jelentősen javítani fogja a szepszis idősebb túlélőinél a neurokognitív funkciót, amelyet a Neuropszichológiai állapot Felmérésére szolgáló Repeatable Battery (RBANS) 40-160 skála mérésével mérnek, amely az azonnali memóriát, a térbeli/konstruktív, nyelvi, figyelem- és késleltetett memóriát méri. Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) nyomkövetési teszt.

A strukturált kognitív rehabilitációs program jelentősen javítja a szepszis idősebb túlélőinek neurokognitív funkcióit, a Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) nyomkövetési teszttel és a szimbólum-számjegy modalitás teszttel mérve, amelyek a teszt befejezéséhez szükséges időtartamot mérik.

A vizsgálók a fent említett tesztek segítségével mérik a kognitív teljesítmény különbségeit 3 és 6 hónapos korban az aktív neurokognitív rehabilitációs beavatkozást végző résztvevőknél a kontrollokhoz képest.
Az Országos Orvostudományi Akadémia ajánlásaival összhangban a kontrollcsoport aktív beavatkozásban részesül.
