최근 연구에 따르면 읽기 장애의 발생률은 교실 수업을 개선함으로써 크게 감소할 수 있습니다. 초등학교에서 효과적인 읽기 교육에는 알파벳 원리에 대한 명시적 교육, 의미 읽기, 읽기 및 쓰기 연습 기회가 포함됩니다. 도시 환경에서의 문해력 개발에 대해 자세히 알아보기 위해 휴스턴과 워싱턴 D.C.에 있는 17개 학교의 학생들을 유치원에서 4학년까지 추적했습니다. 유사한 인구 통계를 기반으로 학교를 선택했습니다. 주로 아프리카계 미국인 학생 인구(95%) 그리고 연방 점심 프로그램에 대한 높은 참여도(85%에서 100%). 각 학교에는 파닉스와 철자법에 중점을 둔 학년별 읽기 프로그램이 제공되었습니다. 이러한 프로그램에는 직접, 통합, 강의실 및 개별 교육 모듈이 포함됩니다.
