Nyere studier viser at forekomsten av lesevansker kan reduseres betydelig ved å forbedre klasseromsundervisningen. Effektiv leseopplæring på barnetrinnene omfatter eksplisitt opplæring i alfabetisk prinsipp, lesing etter mening og muligheter til å trene på lesing og skriving. For å lære mer om utviklingen av leseferdigheter i urbane omgivelser, ble elever ved 17 skoler i Houston og Washington, D.C., fulgt fra barnehage til klasse 4. Skoler ble valgt basert på lignende demografi: hovedsakelig afroamerikansk studentpopulasjon (95 %) og høy deltakelse i det føderale lunsjprogrammet (85 % til 100 %). Hver skole ble utstyrt med klassetilpassede leseprogrammer som fokuserte på lyd og rettskrivning. Disse programmene inkluderte direkte, integrerte, klasseroms- og individuelle instruksjonsmoduler.
Omtrent 1400 barn og 114 lærere deltok hvert år i denne fireårige studien. Designet var krysssekvensielt slik at flertallet av lærerne i en klasse deltok i to år. Alle barn som deltok i vanlig opplæring ble inkludert i studien. Barn under 25. persentilen på en standardisert lesetest ble veiledet individuelt av pensjonerte lærere ved å bruke materialer fra klasserommets leseprogram. En rekke leseplaner var på plass i klasserommene på tvers av disse to stedene. For å hjelpe lærere med å implementere dette materialet effektivt, ble det brukt en pågående forskningsbasert faglig utviklingsmodell, med pensumkonsulenter og trenere som jobbet med lærerne i klasserommet. Forskere observerte i hvert klasserom fire til seks ganger i løpet av året ved å bruke øyeblikkelige opptak av innhold. Observatører fullførte også vurderinger av undervisningskompetanse. Lærere gjennomførte undersøkelser av kunnskap, erfaring, holdninger og instruksjonsstrategier. Et tilfeldig utvalg på åtte til ti elever ble vurdert fire ganger i løpet av året for vekst i leseferdighetsrelaterte ferdigheter og en gang på slutten av året for prestasjoner i lesing, staving og skriving.
