Beschrijving
Inclusiecriteria:
- ≥18 jaar oud
- Vereiste mechanische ventilatie via een orale endotracheale tube
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Kan geen Engels verstaan of spreken vanwege een taalbarrière
- Kan geen Engels verstaan of spreken vanwege een cognitieve stoornis
- Allergie voor bariumsulfaat
- Zwangerschap
- Aanwezigheid van een hartstimulatieapparaat (inclusief tijdelijke epicardiale stimulatie) zonder een onderliggend hartritme zoals bevestigd door behandelend arts of diafragmatische pacemaker
- Nasale endotracheale intubatie tijdens de huidige opname
- Er wordt niet verwacht dat de patiënt ≥48 uur intubatie nodig heeft
- Reeds bestaande dysfagie/aspiratie, stem- of cognitieve stoornis
- Reflux met een voorgeschiedenis van bekende of vermoede aspiratie
- Aanwezigheid van een centraal zenuwstelsel, neuromusculaire of bindweefselziekte (bijv. beroerte, Guillain-Barre, sclerodermie)
- Actieve epilepsie
- Pijnaandoening van de kaakspieren of het onderkaakgewricht
- Ooit tracheotomie of eerdere endotracheale intubatie anders dan voor een operatie (≤ 1 jaar)
- Hoofd- en/of nekziekte (bijv. orofarynxcarcinoom)
- Andere hoofd- en/of halsoperaties dan tonsillectomie
- Bekende of vermoede anatomische afwijkingen of pre-intubatietrauma van de mondholte, keelholte, strottenhoofd of slokdarm
- Bekende of vermoede slaapapneu (behandeld of onbehandeld)
- Eerdere grote thoracale chirurgie (bijv. sternotomie, thoracotomie)
- Ongeplande (bijv. zelf- of accidentele) extubatie of herintubatie vóór toestemming
- Het gewicht overschrijdt de capaciteit van de radiologieapparatuur
- Verwachte plaatsing van de tracheacanule in het ziekenhuis
- Stervend (>90% kans op overlijden in het ziekenhuis), gebaseerd op de beoordeling van het ICU-team
