Het doel van deze studie was om akoestische rhinometrie te gebruiken om veranderingen in de doorgankelijkheid van de neus te beoordelen na veranderingen in houding, unilaterale mechanische obstructie, temperatuur en vochtigheid.
Acht gezonde volwassen vrijwillige proefpersonen ondergingen akoestische rhinometrie onder de volgende omstandigheden: 1) rechtop, zittende positie (controle), 2) rugligging, 3) linker laterale liggende positie, 4) één neusgat mechanisch geblokkeerd, 5) ijskompres op de nek, 6) koud water drinken, 7) warm water drinken, 8) neusvernevelaar, 9) oxymetazoline decongestivum.
Veranderingen in de volumes van de neusholte werden gedetecteerd door akoestische rhinometrie na veranderingen in houding, unilaterale mechanische obstructie, temperatuur en vochtigheid. Vernevelaarbehandeling en inname van heet water veroorzaakten een significante afname van het neusvolume. De neus was in staat zich aan te passen aan omgevings- en fysiologische veranderingen om een consistent totaal neusvolume te behouden.

Beschrijving
Inclusiecriteria:
- Gezonde vrijwilligers, 18-58 jaar oud
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Eventuele nasale symptomen in de afgelopen 3 weken
- Duidelijke septale afwijking/polyposis/infectie
- Elke voorgeschiedenis van allergie, astma of immunodeficiëntie
- Elke systemische aandoening of infectie (bijv. hypertensie/diabetes/hart-, lever-, schildklier- of nierziekte
- Elke wervelkolom- of nekaandoening die normale houdingen niet mogelijk maakt
- Zwangerschap
