De combinatie van alcoholgebruik en negatieve emotionele toestanden is een bijzonder giftige combinatie voor het risico op zelfmoord. De huidige studie onderzoekt veranderingen in alcohol-/drugsgebruik/misbruik en depressie terwijl soldaten de overgang van actieve dienst naar veteraan ondergaan en biedt een gepersonaliseerde, op internet gebaseerde korte interventie die bedoeld is om alcoholmisbruik en depressie bij deze populatie te voorkomen/verminderen.
De doelstellingen van de studie zijn om empirisch de vorm van veranderingen te kwantificeren die optreden met betrekking tot alcoholgebruik en depressie tijdens de overgang; om stabiele individuele risicofactoren (bijv. persoonlijkheid, militaire ervaringen) en dynamische risicofactoren (bijv. veranderingen in stressoren en normatieve contexten in de loop van de tijd) te identificeren die kunnen worden geassocieerd met verschillende temporele patronen van zelfmoordgerelateerd gedrag (bijv. alcoholgebruik/misbruik ) en cognitie (d.w.z. depressie); en ten slotte om te bepalen of een eenvoudige, via internet geleverde korte interventie die wordt getoond, risicovol gedrag in de overgangsveteranenpopulatie kan verminderen.

- Plannen om met pensioen te gaan en geen civiele baan te zoeken
- Plannen om buiten de VS te gaan wonen
- Scheidt of trekt zich terug uit de Nationale Garde of Reserves

Deelnemers die aan de interventieconditie zijn toegewezen, worden in de loop van het onderzoek drie keer uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan een op internet gebaseerde interventie.

De via internet geleverde korte interventie die voor het onderzoek is ontwikkeld, is toegankelijk via computers en mobiele apparaten.
De interventie zal beoordelingsgegevens gebruiken om studiedeelnemers feedback te geven over hun drinkgedrag en strategieën aan te reiken om risicovol gedrag te vermijden.
