De follow-upstudie van het NICHD Neonatal Research Network is een cohortstudie in meerdere centra waarin overlevende baby's met een extreem laag geboortegewicht neurologische ontwikkelings-, neurosensorische en functionele beoordelingen ondergaan op een gecorrigeerde leeftijd van 22-26 maanden (baby's geboren vóór 1 juli 2012 werden gezien gecorrigeerde leeftijd van 18-22 maanden). Het doel van de studie is om potentiële maternale en neonatale risicofactoren te identificeren die de neurologische ontwikkeling van baby's kunnen beïnvloeden, waaronder:
- Evalueren van ontwikkeling van motorische vaardigheden, cognitieve vaardigheden, taal en gedrag
- Het bepalen van sterfte en de prevalentie van specifieke medische aandoeningen
- Het beoordelen van de relatie tussen groei en neurologische uitkomst
- Het beoordelen van de relatie tussen de sociaaleconomische status en het ontwikkelingsresultaat
- Beoordeling van het gebruik van speciale ondersteunende diensten en programma's voor vroegtijdige interventie door deze populatie
- Evaluatie van de behoefte aan follow-up op schoolleeftijd.
De geplande evaluaties verzamelen: demografische informatie; sociaaleconomische status; medische geschiedenis; medicijnen; medische apparatuur vereist; groeigegevens; een gedetailleerd neurologisch onderzoek; Bayley Scales of Infant Development (mentaal, motorisch, babygedrag); Checklist voor het gedrag van kinderen.
Een substudie zal een referentiegroep beoordelen die bestaat uit een beperkt aantal gezonde voldragen baby's geboren in netwerkcentra om de volgende drie doelen te bereiken: 1) om mogelijke vooroordelen bij het vaststellen als gevolg van verwachtingen van de onderzoeker te voorkomen wanneer alleen extreem premature baby's of andere risicovolle baby's worden beoordeeld 2) bij gebrek aan goed ontwikkelde normen voor de Bayley-schalen, om drempels voor beperkingen te definiëren op basis van gegevens voor een representatieve steekproef van gezonde kinderen die voldragen geboren zijn in onze centra en gelijktijdig beoordeeld door dezelfde examinatoren als voor onze hoog- risico zuigelingen; en 3) om te helpen identificeren en aanpakken wanneer er in de loop van de tijd "afwijking" optreedt bij het uitvoeren en scoren van Bayley-beoordelingen.

- Baby's geboren in NRN-centra
- <27 weken zwangerschapsduur
- Baby's die deelnamen aan een of meer aanvullende NICHD NRN-vervolgonderzoeken. Voor baby's die niet voldoen aan de bovenstaande inclusiecriteria, worden de inclusie- en exclusiecriteria bepaald door de criteria voor de aanvullende studie(s). In deze gevallen kunnen zuigelingen die zwaarder zijn dan 1000 gram en/of ouder dan 27 weken worden opgenomen in de FU-studie.
Let op: Deze inclusiecriteria zijn gewijzigd per 1/1/2008. Vóór deze datum werden baby's met een geboortegewicht tussen 401 en 1500 gram die binnen 14 dagen na de geboorte op NRN NICU's waren opgenomen, in de database opgenomen.
