De interventie zal gebruik maken van de cognitieve gedragstherapie (CGT), een evidence-based psychotherapeutische benadering voor het aanpakken van psychische problemen, variërend van angst, depressie en andere psychische aandoeningen. CBT is gebaseerd op een cognitief model, de manier waarop individuen een situatie waarnemen, hangt nauwer samen met hun reactie dan met de situatie zelf. Het doel van CBT is om mensen te helpen zich te concentreren op het oplossen van hun huidige problemen. De therapeut helpt de patiënt te leren hoe hij vervormde of nutteloze denkpatronen kan identificeren, onnauwkeurige overtuigingen kan herkennen en veranderen, op een positievere manier met anderen om kan gaan en dienovereenkomstig gedrag kan veranderen. Deelnemers aan de interventie-arm krijgen 12 wekelijkse CGT-groepssessies van een uur en drie één-op-één-therapiesessies van één uur gedurende het 12 weken durende Father For a Lifetime (FFL)-programma. We zullen een individuele en collectieve CGT-interventie voor geestelijke gezondheid implementeren die aansluit bij de onderwerpen die aan bod komen in het wekelijkse FFL-curriculum. De CBT-groepsinterventie zal bijvoorbeeld methoden onderzoeken om veerkracht op te bouwen, vaardigheden te ontwikkelen om kalm te blijven in stressvolle situaties, vaardigheden te leren om met kinderen om te gaan en te leren omgaan met gespannen relaties. Het FFL-curriculum is aangepast van het Wise Guys: Male Responsibility Curriculum, een op feiten gebaseerd curriculum dat is ontworpen om mannen te betrekken bij het voorkomen van zwangerschappen. De leerplanonderwerpen zijn onderverdeeld in drie categorieën: 1) persoonlijke verantwoordelijkheid, 2) verantwoordelijkheid voor uw kind en 3) verantwoordelijkheid voor uw familie en gemeenschap. Afbeelding 1 hieronder toont de onderwerpbeschrijving die elke week binnen elke categorie wordt behandeld. De bedoeling van onze voorgestelde therapeutische geestelijke gezondheidsinterventie is om de geestelijke gezondheidstoestand te verbeteren door gebruik te maken van CGT in groepsverband en door de behandeling van specifieke psychische aandoeningen in de een-op-een therapiesessies te initiëren om tegemoet te komen aan de unieke behoeften van de vader die mogelijk niet worden aangepakt. in groepsverband. Deelnemers ontvangen de interventie onmiddellijk nadat de FFL-programmering is afgelopen.
De interventie zal worden uitgevoerd door een gediplomeerde geestelijke gezondheidsprofessional (LIMHP) die qua geslacht en cultuur overeenkomt, die zal worden opgeleid om het curriculum te geven door de co-onderzoeker en Senior Director of Behavioral Health Services in het Charles Drew Health Center. Daarnaast krijgen de mannen drie een-op-een therapiesessies met een Charles Drew LIMHP die aan het einde van het FFL-programma zullen zijn afgerond. Deelnemers aan de vergelijkingsarm ontvangen het standaard programmacurriculum van 12 weken. Onze voorgestelde studie valt binnen het translatiespectrum van T3, waaronder het testen van een interventie binnen een gemeenschapsomgeving door observatie en het verzamelen van informatie over implementatie om de haalbaarheid of effectiviteit te bepalen.

Experimenteel: FFL + cognitieve gedragstherapie
De deelnemers aan de interventie krijgen het standaardprogramma van 12 weken van Father For a Lifetime en de Cognitieve Gedragstherapie.
De interventie wordt uitgevoerd door een gediplomeerde geestelijke gezondheidsprofessional (LIMHP) die qua geslacht en cultuur bij elkaar past.
Daarnaast krijgen de mannen drie een-op-een therapiesessies met een Charles Drew LIMHP die aan het einde van het FFL-programma zullen zijn afgerond.
