Vetmalabsorptie komt vaak voor bij personen met cystische fibrose (CF) en pancreasinsufficiëntie (PI). Hierdoor lopen ze risico op tekorten aan calorieën, essentiële vetzuren en choline, wat op zijn beurt kan leiden tot groeistoornissen en een slechter klinisch beloop. Het doel van dit onderzoek is om uit te vinden of het al dan niet dagelijks innemen van LYM-X-SORB™ gedurende een periode van 18 maanden het probleem dat mensen met CF en PI hebben met het absorberen van vet en choline zal verhelpen. Deelname zal CF-artsen en andere beroepsbeoefenaren in de gezondheidszorg helpen meer te leren over de potentiële voordelen van LYM-X-SORB™ voor kinderen en adolescenten met CF en PI. Deze voordelen kunnen zijn: betere opname van vet, betere cholinestatus, betere groei in lengte, gewicht, spieren en botten, betere longen en verbetering van de gezondheidstoestand.
De studie zal in totaal 78 deelnemers inschrijven van het Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) en van verschillende andere Cystic Fibrosis Centers. De ene helft van de deelnemers wordt willekeurig uitgekozen om het actieve poeder met het LYM-X-SORB™-supplement te ontvangen en de andere helft krijgt een placebo (zonder actief supplement).

Beschrijving
Inclusiecriteria:
- Gediagnosticeerd met cystische fibrose (CF) met pancreasinsufficiëntie (PI)
- Proefpersonen van 6 tot 17 jaar
- In normale staat van goede gezondheid
- Verbintenis van gezin en proefpersoon aan het studieprotocol van 18 maanden
- Fecaal elastase < 15 µg/g ontlasting
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Geforceerd expiratoir volume op één seconde, % voorspeld (FEV1) < 40% voorspeld
- Andere chronische gezondheidsproblemen die de opname van het maagdarmkanaal, de groei, de inname via de voeding en de voedingsstatus kunnen beïnvloeden
- Leverziekte, longtransplantatie, coeliakie, allergie/intolerantie voor tarwe/gluten, zwanger
- Deelname aan een ander voedingsgerelateerd interventieonderzoek bij CF
- Regelmatige inname van vetzuren (d.w.z. visolie) of choline voedingssupplementen
- Parenterale toediening van lipiden thuis (d.w.z. intralipiden)

De placebo is samengesteld uit sojaboonolie, zonnebloemolie, volledig gehydrogeneerde katoenzaadolie en lijnzaadolie gedispergeerd met 16 gew.% op meel en suiker.
De placebo is >99% triglyceriden zonder transvetzuren.
De vetzuursamenstelling en het caloriegehalte zijn afgestemd op het actieve supplement (Lym-X-Sorb).
Een dosering bevat 32 gram poeder en wordt gedurende 18 maanden twee keer per dag (6 tot 11,9 jaar) of drie keer per dag (12 tot 17,9 jaar) met voedsel ingenomen.
