Yksityiskohtainen kuvaus
Viisikymmentä tervettä savuttoman tupakan käyttäjää rekrytoidaan mainonnan avulla Minneapolis-St. Paulin alueella. Tämä tutkimus tehdään Minnesotan yliopiston tupakkatutkimuskeskuksessa. Säännölliset savuttoman tupakan käyttäjät seulotaan puhelimitse. Mikäli osallistujat ovat kelvollisia puhelimen näytön jälkeen, heidät kutsutaan osallistumaan perehdytyskäynnille klinikalle, jossa hankitaan suostumus ja koehenkilöt täyttävät lomakkeet tupakoinnistaan ja sairaushistoriastaan. Koehenkilöt, jotka määritetään kelpoisiksi perehdytyskäynnin jälkeen, palaavat klinikalle peruskäynnille, jossa he saavat savuttoman tupakkatuotteen ja heitä neuvotaan käyttämään vain tutkimustuotetta, kunnes he palaavat ensimmäiseen laboratoriokertaansa seitsemän päivää myöhemmin.
Ennen jokaista kolmesta laboratorioistunnosta koehenkilöt keräävät kaiken virtsansa 24 tunnin ajan ennen sovittua tapaamista. Jokaisessa laboratorioistunnossa osallistujat käyttävät tutkimustuotetta ja keräävät sylkensä ja tupakkamehunsa säännöllisin väliajoin. Osallistujat myös pyyhkäisevät poskensa sisäpuolelta soluja ja heiltä otetaan verikoe.
Kerättyjä näytteitä käytetään NNN:n metabolisen aktivaation ja DNA:n sitoutumisen karakterisoimiseen.

- Säännöllinen savuttoman tupakan käyttäjä
- Hyvä fyysinen terveys ilman epävakaita sairauksia
- Vakaa ja hyvä mielenterveys, eli heillä ei tällä hetkellä ole epävakaata tai hoitamatonta psykiatrista diagnoosia, mukaan lukien päihteiden väärinkäyttö DSM-IV-kriteerien mukaan viimeisen kuuden kuukauden aikana
- Halukas suorittamaan tutkimustehtäviä, kuten verinäytteiden ottoa, syljen keräämistä, virtsan keräämistä, useita klinikkakäyntejä
- Naishenkilöille, jotka voivat tulla raskaaksi ja joiden ei tiedetä olevan raskaana tai imettävät tai jotka suunnittelevat raskautta seuraavan 12 kuukauden sisällä
- Anna kirjallinen tietoinen suostumus
