安全な睡眠とヘルスリテラシーは、国、州、地方レベルでの優先事項です。 1990年代に「Back to Sleep」キャンペーンが開始されて以来大幅に改善されたものの、睡眠関連の乳児死亡率、特に乳児突然死症候群(SIDS)は10年以上停滞している。 SIDS 教育のために印刷物が広く配布されていますが、これまでのところ効果が証明されたものはなく、全体的な満足度は低いです。 理由としては、受動的な配信、魅力のないコンテンツ、特に社会経済的地位の低い人々の過度に高い読書レベルなどが挙げられます。 証拠によると、理想的な戦略には、簡素さ、感情的な訴え、文化的配慮、および低読解レベルを組み合わせた印刷物が含まれ、医療従事者によって伝えられ、複数回レビューされます。 児童書は、絵と文章を組み合わせて感情を呼び起こし、大切にされ、繰り返される親子の共有体験を刺激する潜在的に理想的な媒体です。
これは、早期介入家庭訪問プログラム「Every Child Succeeds(ECS)」に登録した、リスクがあり社会経済的地位が低い初産婦集団を対象としたランダム化対照試験である。 9 つの機関からの ECS の家庭訪問者は、安全な睡眠教育のために特別にデザインされた児童書 (介入) または標準的なパンフレット (対照) のいずれかを利用するようにランダムに割り当てられます。 登録目標は230人の母親です。 訓練を受けた ECS の家庭訪問者は、同意を得て、本やパンフレットを配布し、健康リテラシー (REALM-R 画面経由)、安全な睡眠に関する知識、および家庭リテラシーのオリエンテーションのベースライン評価を、妊娠第 3 学期の出産前の家庭訪問中に行います。 結果データは、乳児の睡眠習慣が確立されつつある生後 1 週間と、SIDS リスクのピークが始まる生後 2 か月の時点でのその後の家庭訪問中に、同じ訪問者によって収集されます。 訪問のたびに、本やパンフレットを確認します。
結果は次のカテゴリーで介入群と対照群の間で比較されます: 1) 母親の安全な睡眠に関する知識、2) 母親の安全な睡眠ガイドラインの順守 (観察)、3) 安全な睡眠ガイドラインを伝えるために利用された資料に対する母親と提供者の満足度、および 4 )健康教育のために児童書を利用することが家庭の識字志向にどの程度影響を与えるか(つまり、 読書に対する態度)。
