Burn-out bij artsen is de afgelopen tien jaar toegenomen en uit onderzoeken is gebleken dat bijna 50% van de Amerikaanse artsen tekenen van burn-out vertoont. Burn-out wordt gekenmerkt door emotionele uitputting, gevoelens van cynisme en onthechting van de patiënt. Artsen in de frontlinie van de zorg, zoals huisartsgeneeskunde en interne geneeskunde, lopen het grootste risico, en burn-out wordt in verband gebracht met een verhoogd risico op hart- en vaatziekten, alcoholisme en zelfmoord. Burn-out heeft ook een negatieve invloed op de patiëntenzorg. De oorzaken van burn-out zijn complex en een groeiend aantal onderzoeken heeft zich gericht op het ontwikkelen van strategieën om zowel klinische als organisatorische factoren aan te pakken. Een potentiële oorzaak van burn-out bij clinici die minder aandacht heeft gekregen, is de SDH van hun patiënten.
De SDH, of de omstandigheden waarin mensen worden geboren, groeien, leven en ouder worden, hebben een grote invloed op morbiditeit en mortaliteit. Nationale organisaties hebben steeds vaker opgeroepen tot gezondheidszorgsystemen om SDH aan te pakken, zoals voedsel- en huisvestingsonzekerheid, om de gezondheid van de bevolking te verbeteren. Hoewel clinici het belang van SDH voor de patiëntenzorg erkennen, hebben clinici het gevoel dat ze niet de tijd, kennis of hulpmiddelen hebben om SDH effectief aan te pakken, wat kan leiden tot gevoelens van angst en hulpeloosheid bij het voorzien in de onvervulde sociale behoeften van patiënten. De SDH kan leiden tot een grotere patiëntcomplexiteit en werkdruk voor de clinicus. Ook de schijnbaar onoverkomelijke sociale behoeften waarmee veel patiënten worden geconfronteerd, dragen in belangrijke mate bij aan de afname van het aantal medicijnbewoners dat voor een carrière in de eerstelijnszorg kiest. Het ontbreken van een hulpmiddel om het eerstelijnszorgteam te helpen bij het aanpakken van SDH is dus een kritiek probleem dat zowel patiënten als clinici negatief kan beïnvloeden.
Ons langetermijndoel is om het vermogen van de eerstelijnszorgteams om de SDH aan te pakken te verbeteren door gebruik te maken van een mobiele gezondheidstool die het team kan helpen bij het aanpakken van de onvervulde sociale behoeften van patiënten in klinische omgevingen. Mobiele gezondheidshulpmiddelen, zoals tablets, zijn veelbelovend gebleken bij het verminderen van ongelijkheden in zorg en het aanpakken van onvervulde sociale behoeften in pediatrische praktijken. Er zijn echter weinig gegevens over hoe het aanpakken van SDH de burn-out van artsen beïnvloedt. Mobiele gezondheidstools hebben het potentieel om door patiënten gerapporteerde gegevens te verzamelen en patiënten te verbinden met geschikt ondersteunend personeel zonder de werkstroom van de kliniek te verstoren en het vermogen van eerstelijnszorgteams om patiënten van middelen te voorzien te verbeteren. Het doel van deze studie is om de impact te testen van een tabletgebaseerd platform dat de rol van ondersteunend personeel vergroot om SDH aan te pakken op burn-out bij clinici.
