Achtergrond: Antipsychotica zijn beperkt in hun vermogen om psychiatrische symptomen, kwaliteit van leven en angststatus te verbeteren bij patiënten met chronische schizofrenie. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) kan mogelijk de angststatus verminderen en het subjectieve welbevinden bij acute patiënten verbeteren. Het is een ideale revalidatie-interventie voor patiënten met chronische schizofrenie. Geen enkele studie heeft echter de effecten van PMR op de uitkomsten bij patiënten met chronische schizofrenie onderzocht.
Design: Deze studie paste een gerandomiseerd parallel case-control design toe.
Methoden: Gerandomiseerde controlestudie in ziekenhuizen in Taiwan. Tachtig proefpersonen met chronische schizofrenie werden gerekruteerd uit een psychotische afdeling en gerandomiseerd in PMR of controlegroepen. Patiënten in de interventiegroep namen gedurende 12 weken deel aan progressieve spierontspanning; terwijl patiënten in de leden van de controlegroep ondersteunende behandeling zoals gewoonlijk (TAU) kregen. Alle deelnemers voltooiden de metingen van angst, psychotische syndromen en kwaliteit van leven bij baseline, 3 maanden en 3 maanden follow-up.

Inclusiecriteria:
- Klinische diagnose van schizofrenie
- Zonder het risico van zelfverwonding en geweld
- Patiënten in de leeftijd van 20-65 jaar
- Had geen alcohol- en drugsmisbruik
- Kan Mandarijn of Taiwanees gebruiken om te communiceren
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Patiënten met een andere psychiatrische comorbiditeit
- Patiënten met musculoskeletale problemen
- patiënten die 50 minuten niet kunnen zitten
- Had het afgelopen jaar progressieve spierontspanningstraining gevolgd
- Diagnose van bevestigde hart- en vaatziekten
